Information on pigment oils

One aspect that often arises when making wooden products is the colour of the product when using pigmented oils. This document will provide you with basic information on how Ton approaches this matter.

Colour variations between samples
and finished products

The colour of individual table tops may vary due to the absorbency of the squared timbers from which it is composed. It is therefore very difficult to faithfully represent a given shade on the small wood sample within the Collection box. The wood samples are made of plywood, unlike the table top, which absorbs the tinted oil to a lesser degree.

However, it is possible to ensure the consistency of the colour shade in a certain spectrum, which is determined by the plywood sample swatch. In order to better understand this issue you can use the colour scale, which ranges between the beech and oak shade on the swatch. So while the saturation of the selected colour may vary, we can always guaranteed the warmth of the shade.

Coloured pigment oils are only intended for tables. Should you wish to match our other products with the shades of these oils, they are available in pigment colours or stains that make it really easy to combine multiple colours and materials together.

The examples below are merely illustrative, and many other suitable combinations are possible.

Smoky White W115

Smoky (2)

The shade of the Smoky white pigment oil softens the colour structure of the wood and brings a cool tint to it. If the customer prefers colder tones they can choose the White C120 or Cloud Grey C139 pigments, Light White S110 stain along with a wave from the C Arco Ice or Cleo Pearl category.

If the customer prefers warmer tones they can combine Smoky White with product in the natural execution or the Mocca Beige C610 pigment. Both variants go well with Cura 62125 from category A. Everything can be brightened with Resin Yellow C450 complemented by the Fiord 2 0422 fabric from category D.

Misty Green W520

Misty (2)

A touch of forest fog is reflected by the Misty Green oil, inspired by the forests surrounding Hostýn – the mountain towering over our factory. Because of that, it combines nicely with the Pebble Green C540 or darker Deep Green C570 pigments.

Both of these shades can be combined with the Cleo Salbei or Arco Pond fabric from category C, with its unique structure thanks to coloured threads. A more accessible variant, which is also tone-in-tone, is represented by Cura 68182 from category A. If the customer prefers vinyls, Grain Ceniza from category A can complement both green pigments.

Bark Brown W660

Bark

Tree bark was the main inspiration when choosing the Dark Brown oil. Its warm undertones are the best match with Nougat B114 staining, natural oak shades or the top-quality Elmo leather. We recommend Elmotique 43807 or 93957 leathers, which gives the product a premium appearance.

The colour tonality is suitably complemented with brown shade fabrics, for example, Fiord 2 0262 from category D or the Renewed Loop 61280 recycled polyester from category A. Haptic sensations are enhanced by the use of warm shades of the Lowlands wool from category B or the Prescot Antilop or Clay semi-aniline leather.

Earthy Brown W685

Earthy

Dark earthly tones are reflected in the Earthy Brown oil. It blends best with the Dark Wenge B105 and Coffee B4 stain shades. The Black Grain B123 stain helps emphasise a premium look. It can be easily complemented with tone-on-tone fabric in order to achieve a harmonic unity. You can browse our portfolio for the following options in a wide price range: Renewed Loop 60999 in category A, Arco Ebony in category C, and Elmotique 99001 among the leathers.

Earthy Brown oil can be enhanced by using substances with a distinctive texture. These include Cleo Magma, which consists of blue and brown threads. The threads can help in the composition of patterns that allow the combination of multiple fabrics for one product (e.g. Albu). This principle can be applied with the Cleo Coal fabric which, thanks to its combination of coloured threads, can be supplemented by fabrics from other categories to create a blue or green colour scale.

Stone Grey W170

Stone

Stone Grey is inspired by nature. It therefore reflects the grey of forest stones, which makes it specific. It can be defined as a cold shade. If you want to stick with natural tones, it can be combined with the Forest Green B580 staining together with the Fiord 2 0961 fabric from category D or Lowlands 575 from category B.

Stone Grey can also be combined with blue and grey pigments from our portfolio. The blue undertone of this oil can be emphasised by the Fiord 2 0751 fabric from category D or Arco Coast from category C.

Basic technological information

The application of pigmented oils is a gentle and modern technology that we primarily offer for solid wood tables where it is desirable to bring out the texture of the wood. Pigment oil is, simply put, transparent oil into which pigments are mixed to define the resulting shade. The oil is partially impregnated into the wood and partially remains on the surface of the wood. It is applied onto the surface in two layers.

After several minutes, excess oil is wiped off the finished surface. The pigments contained within the oil colour the surface and adhere to the spots that aren’t smooth – pores, knots micro-tears, etc. The demands on the high quality of the manufacturing process are enormous as every scratch and fault is highlighted by the oil finish. The age of the wood or the part of the log used to make the individual segments of the joint additionally play a role. There are variations in absorbency and, therefore, oil absorption in the different directions of the wood cuts.

Wood is a natural material, so it is completely fine and authentic for its surface to be uneven and instead have a natural pattern. When the customer is inclined towards the originality of natural materials a product finished with pigmented oil can be recommended to them.
